The I amsterdam City Card is most useful for visitors who want to combine museums, attractions and local public transport in one product. The key is choosing the right version: the classic time-based Total Experience card and the newer Explorer option solve different problems.
If you are still deciding between different brands and pass types, start with our Amsterdam city pass comparison. This page focuses specifically on I amsterdam.
I amsterdam Total Experience
The Total Experience version is available for 24, 48, 72, 96 or 120 hours. During that period, it combines admission to a large network of museums and attractions with unlimited GVB public transport in Amsterdam. It also includes one Amsterdam canal cruise and 24 hours of bicycle rental.
This version makes the most sense when you plan to use several parts of the package. If you mainly want one museum and otherwise plan to walk, it can be unnecessary. If you want two or three museums, regular tram or metro journeys and a cruise, the value becomes much easier to justify.

I amsterdam Explorer
The Explorer version works differently. You choose access to 3, 5 or 7 participating locations and have five consecutive days to use those choices. GVB public transport is not included.
That makes Explorer better suited to visitors who want a smaller sightseeing bundle without putting a 24- or 48-hour clock on their museum visits. It is less attractive when you also expect to spend heavily on local transport.

What is included?
The current I amsterdam network includes more than 70 museums, attractions and experiences across Amsterdam and the wider metropolitan area. Examples include Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum, Moco Museum, NEMO Science Museum, ARTIS, A’DAM LOOKOUT, Rembrandt House Museum, Eye Filmmuseum and Amsterdam Castle Muiderslot.
The exact list and whether an attraction is fully included or discounted can change. Check the current participating locations before buying, especially if one specific museum is the main reason you want the card.

Public transport with the City Card
The Total Experience version includes GVB buses, trams, metros and ferries within Amsterdam. It also covers GVB night buses. It does not include NS trains, including the train from Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam Central Station, and it does not turn regional transport outside the GVB network into a free journey.

Canal cruise and bike rental
Total Experience includes one canal cruise with a participating operator and 24 hours of bicycle rental. These extras matter when calculating value. If a cruise and bike rental were already on your itinerary, they make the card much easier to justify than if you were only comparing museum tickets.
Read our separate Amsterdam canal cruise guide if you want to compare the cruise experience itself.
What is not included?
The two exclusions British visitors most often need to know about are the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House. Neither is included in the I amsterdam City Card, so reserve those separately if they are priorities.
The card also does not include the Schiphol train. Do not count the airport transfer as part of your savings calculation.
Is the I amsterdam City Card worth it?
It is strongest for visitors who plan several included museums or attractions and would also buy local transport, a canal cruise or bike rental. It is weaker for low-cost trips built mainly around walking, free neighbourhoods and one expensive museum.
Before buying, list the places you genuinely want to visit. Check which are included and total the separate ticket cost. Then add realistic transport and cruise costs if those would already have been part of your trip. That gives you a much better answer than relying on a headline savings percentage.

Who should choose it?
- Museum-focused first-time visitors: especially if Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk, Moco, NEMO or smaller museums are on the list.
- Visitors using trams and metro regularly: the Total Experience version simplifies local transport.
- Two- or three-day city breaks: when several paid sights are already planned.
- Visitors who want a slower pace: consider Explorer instead of a time-limited card.
Who should probably skip it?
- Visitors whose main priorities are only Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House.
- Travellers planning mostly free walks, parks, markets and neighbourhoods.
- Anyone expecting airport train travel to be included.
- Visitors who would add unwanted attractions purely to justify the card price.
