Amsterdam has several sightseeing passes, but they are not interchangeable. The right choice depends on whether you want museums and public transport, a flexible shortlist of paid attractions, or simply a few separate tickets.
For most first-time visitors, the decision is easiest when you start with your actual itinerary rather than the advertised maximum saving. If you want a museum-heavy trip with GVB public transport included, the I amsterdam City Card is usually the most natural option. If you already know you want a handful of attractions such as Heineken Experience, A’DAM LOOKOUT, Moco Museum, a canal cruise or immersive experiences, the Go City Amsterdam passes deserve a closer look. If you only plan one or two paid sights, separate tickets can still be the simpler choice.

| Go City All-Inclusive | Visitors planning several paid attractions each day | No general GVB transport pass | Can encourage an overpacked itinerary |

Which Amsterdam city pass is best for museums?
The I amsterdam City Card is the stronger starting point for a museum-focused trip because it includes a broad museum network together with other city benefits. The current official offer includes major names such as the Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum, Moco Museum, NEMO, ARTIS and the Rembrandt House Museum, plus many smaller museums and attractions.
Two famous exceptions matter: the Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House are not included. If either is essential to your trip, book those separately and judge the value of a pass on the rest of your itinerary.

Which pass is best if you want public transport?
The I amsterdam Total Experience has the clearest advantage here. It includes unlimited travel on GVB buses, trams, metros and ferries within Amsterdam for the validity of the card. It does not include the NS train from Schiphol Airport, so you still need a separate airport journey. Our Amsterdam public transport guide explains the difference between GVB, trains and regional transport.
The I amsterdam Explorer does not include GVB transport. Go City is primarily an attraction-pass system, so transport should not be the reason you choose it.
Which pass is best for attractions and experiences?
Go City becomes more interesting if your list is built around paid attractions rather than mainly museums and transport. Its Amsterdam line-up currently includes options such as Heineken Experience, Rijksmuseum, ARTIS, A’DAM LOOKOUT, Madame Tussauds, Moco Museum, The Amsterdam Dungeon, WONDR, THIS IS HOLLAND, canal cruises and selected day trips.
The Go City Explorer Pass is useful when you want a fixed number of attractions and flexibility over when to use them. The All-Inclusive version makes more sense only when you genuinely plan several included attractions per day.

What is the difference between Explorer and time-based passes?
A choice-based pass lets you select a number of attractions. That suits travellers who want a slower weekend and only have a few paid priorities. A time-based pass works differently: once activated, the clock starts running for the number of hours or days purchased. It rewards a denser itinerary.
This difference matters more than the headline discount. A three-day visitor who wants two museums, a long lunch, a neighbourhood walk and one canal cruise may get more value from a flexible choice pass than an unlimited pass. Someone planning multiple museums, transport journeys and attractions each day may benefit more from a time-based card.
Is a city pass worth it for a weekend in Amsterdam?
Often, but not automatically. Make a shortlist of what you were going to book anyway. Then compare those individual ticket prices with the pass price and check whether reservations are required. Do not add attractions to your schedule just to make a pass look cheaper.
For a typical two- or three-day city break, a pass becomes more attractive when it replaces several purchases at once: for example museums, a canal cruise, a viewpoint or attraction, and local transport. If most of your time will be spent walking through neighbourhoods, eating, shopping and visiting free places, separate tickets are often perfectly sensible.

Important exclusions to check before buying
- Anne Frank House: not included in the I amsterdam City Card. Book directly through the official Anne Frank House ticket system.
- Van Gogh Museum: not included in the I amsterdam City Card. A separate timed ticket is required.
- Schiphol train: not included with the I amsterdam City Card’s GVB transport benefit.
- Reservations: some attractions included with a pass still require a timeslot.
- Changing line-ups: attraction-pass inclusions can change, so always check the current list before paying.
