On a sunny morning in April, Tessa and I chose to visit Fabrique des Lumieres in the Westerpark. We were looking for something beyond the standard museums. And we found it: a surprising mix of art and technology. It’s captivating for everyone, even without knowledge of art. Here, art is accessible, interactive, and fun. An ideal spot for a casual day out.

What is Fabrique des Lumieres?
Fabrique des Lumieres is a place where art comes to life. Here, technology and creativity merge to offer you an unforgettable experience. As you step inside, you’re immediately immersed in a world filled with light, color, and sound. What’s special about this museum is how the artworks are presented. Not still paintings on a wall, but dynamic projections that fill every corner of the space.
The high walls of the old gas factory in Westerpark make the perfect canvas for these impressive digital exhibitions. The offerings change regularly, making every visit a new discovery. Whether it’s your first time or you’ve been here before, Fabrique des Lumieres surprises you every time with its unique combination of art and technology.
What to Expect at Fabrique des Lumieres
When Tessa and I walked into Fabrique des Lumieres, it was as if we stepped into a gigantic, living painting. First up was ‘Dutch Masters’, where Rembrandt, Jan Steen, and Van Gogh stole the show. It felt like stepping back in time, but with a modern twist. The paintings almost moved, thanks to the projections.
Rembrandt’s dark, deep colors truly came to life. And Jan Steen’s lively chaos? It was so vivid you could almost hear what was happening. Van Gogh’s starry night around us felt almost magical, as if we were walking through his brushstrokes.
Next was Mondrian’s turn. That was a totally different vibe. Everything became structured and full of color. Red, yellow, and blue squares moved across the walls and floor. It was as if we were standing in a Mondrian painting, surrounded by his quest for perfect harmony and balance.
At Fabrique des Lumieres, you don’t just look at art; you experience it. For me and Tessa, it was as if we walked through different worlds, each with their own story and atmosphere. And that’s the beauty of this spot in Westerpark: it lets you experience art in a whole new way.
Why is Fabrique des Lumieres Fun with Kids and Teenagers?
Visiting Fabrique des Lumieres with Tessa was an eye-opener, especially when I saw how children and teenagers reacted to the exhibitions. It’s clear this museum offers something special for the younger generation, who might not always be easily captivated by traditional art.
First, the interactive nature of the exhibitions is hugely appealing. The kids were not just watching; they were part of the art, playing with the light projections, and even trying to follow the moving images with their hands. It was more than a museum visit; it was an adventurous exploration for them.
For teenagers, often glued to their screens, Fabrique des Lumieres offered a new form of digital experience. They could take selfies against the backdrop of impressive artworks, making art suddenly ‘cool’. More than once, I heard teenagers talking about how ‘epic’ the artworks were.
Moreover, it’s educational in a fun way. Children and teenagers learn about famous artists and their works without it feeling like a lesson. By hearing the stories behind the paintings and the artists, they gained a deeper understanding of the art they saw.
