Looking for a film experience you won’t soon forget? LAB111 in Amsterdam-West is a place where film, art and great food come together in a monumental old laboratory. Here, it’s about more than just watching films: you step into a creative hub where expats, filmmakers and bon vivants meet. LAB111 is quirky, welcoming and always full of surprises. In this article, I’ll take you to this unique cult cinema, share my personal tips and explain why a visit to LAB111 absolutely deserves a spot on your Amsterdam bucket list.
Where is LAB111?
You’ll find LAB111 at Arie Biemondstraat 111, in the heart of Amsterdam Oud-West. The building is a former pathological anatomy laboratory, built in 1921 and, since 2016, home to this remarkable cinema. As soon as you walk down the street, you sense you’re at a place where history and creativity come together.
The location is easily accessible by public transport. Trams 7 and 17 stop within walking distance, as does bus 753. Coming by bike? There’s plenty of space to park your bike. LAB111 even encourages visitors to come by bike or public transport, as the building has stairs and, unfortunately, isn’t wheelchair accessible. Parking is available nearby, but bear in mind spaces are limited and paid parking is in effect.
The building is part of the former SMART Project Space complex, which was fully restored in 2008. As a result, it breathes a blend of history and contemporary art. You’ll feel immediately welcome in this creative environment.
What’s the atmosphere like at LAB111?
What makes LAB111 so special is its atmosphere. As soon as you enter, the monumental character stands out: high ceilings, original features and a light, open entrance. Yet it never feels cold or distant. On the contrary, the atmosphere is warm, homely and just a little bit unconventional.
The crowd is a mix of young Amsterdammers, international expats, film lovers and creatives. You’ll notice people come here for the love of film, but also for the sense of togetherness. It’s not your average cinema, but a place where it’s easy to join a long table, chat at the bar or catch up after a film.
LAB111 feels like a living room for the city. You can quietly work with a coffee, have a leisurely lunch or unwind with a drink after a film. The staff are enthusiastic and happy to help if you have questions about the programme or menu.
Cinema rooms and programming
LAB111 has two cosy screening rooms, each with comfortable seats and an intimate feel. The rooms aren’t large, so you’re always close to the screen and really immersed in the film. Sound and picture quality are excellent, making every screening special.
The film offering is surprising and varied. You won’t find standard blockbusters here, but carefully curated arthouse films, special classics, modern arthouse documentaries and unconventional genre films. Think of impressive restorations like “Ikiru” by Akira Kurosawa or “Plein Soleil” in 4K. Many films have English subtitles, ideal for expats and international visitors.
The programme is updated every week. LAB111 regularly organises themed specials, such as anime nights, queer nights and retrospectives of famous directors. Recently, there was an Akira Kurosawa week and a queer film festival in collaboration with IQMF. The HUMP! Film Festival and CinemAsia are also hosted here. There’s always something new to discover, even if you’re a regular visitor.
Bar Strangelove
A visit to LAB111 isn’t complete without stopping by Bar Strangelove. This bar and kitchen are named after Kubrick’s film classic “Dr. Strangelove” and form the beating heart of the building. Here you can enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks, all in a relaxed, informal setting.
The menu is surprising and sustainable. They use sourdough from their own culture, organic flour, and local Fior di Latte mozzarella. From 17:30 to 21:30, you can choose from sourdough pizzas baked in an Italian stone oven, with vegan and gluten-free options. The focaccias and sandwiches are also popular, as are the organic Stranamore wines from their own Italian vineyard.
On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays there’s brunch from 11:00 to 17:00. Think homemade limoncello, fresh juices and original dishes. The kitchen is open until 22:00, with the restaurant serving until about 21:30–22:00. It’s all about quality, local products and a laid-back vibe. You can really tell the food is made with love here.
Art, debate and more at LAB111
LAB111 is more than just film. The building offers space for art exhibitions, debate evenings and external events. In Bar Strangelove and downstairs in the cinema, new exhibitions are on show each quarter, often featuring work from the LAB111 community or local artists. This gives the building an extra creative boost.
There are often debate nights, lectures and specials on current topics. After a film, you can stay for a discussion or take part in a workshop. External festivals like IQMF Queer Summer, the HUMP! Film Festival and CinemAsia ensure a diverse programme and draw a broad audience.
The collaboration with Stadsboeren and Wellbeeing is also unique. In the courtyard you’ll find vegetable patches and beehives. They even offer ‘Bee Pollination’ courses. All of this contributes to the sustainable and engaged character of LAB111.
