Flevopark in Amsterdam is one of those places where you can completely forget the bustle of the city. This green park lies in Amsterdam-East, right behind the Indische Buurt, and feels like a hidden oasis. Whether you want to exercise, relax with friends or simply unwind, Flevopark will surprise you with its versatility. In this article I’ll share my favourite spots, tips and activities in the park, so you’ll see why Flevopark is the hotspot for young adults who love nature, sport and sociability.
Location: a green surprise in Amsterdam-East
Flevopark is located on the eastern side of Amsterdam, just behind the lively Indische Buurt. The park borders Flevopark Forest and the Nieuwe Diep, a large stretch of open water. Because of this, the park feels much larger and more natural than you would expect in the city. You can easily reach the park by tram 7 or 14, or by bike via Insulindeweg. The entrance at Valentijnkade is the best known, but there are several access points dotted around the park’s edges.
What I love most about the location is that the park isn’t directly next to a busy road. You mainly hear birds, the wind and occasionally the gentle hum of other visitors. It truly feels like a green lung in the heart of the city. Because Flevopark borders the water, you can even paddle into the park by canoe or SUP board, which adds an adventurous touch.
The park’s position next to the Indische Buurt gives it a relaxed, diverse vibe. You’ll see students, young families, athletes and locals all enjoying it in their own way—yet it never feels overcrowded.
Atmosphere: relaxed, lively and surprisingly green
What makes Flevopark special is its relaxed atmosphere. The park is big enough to always find a quiet spot, even on sunny days. At the same time, there’s plenty going on. On the large lawn near the main entrance, groups of friends often picnic or play frisbee. Further in, you’ll find peaceful woodland paths and hidden benches by the water.
At weekends the park takes on an almost festival-like feel. People bring blankets, food and drinks to enjoy the sun. Yet it never feels chaotic or overwhelming. The wide lanes, ponds and open water create space and calm. You could easily spend an afternoon here without getting bored.
The mix of water, trees and open fields also makes Flevopark very photogenic. Especially in the early morning or at sunset, the light is stunning. I always take my camera along when I go for a walk. You’ll discover a surprising number of birds, flowers and even ancient trees you won’t often find in other city parks.
Facilities: from outdoor pool to tearoom
Flevopark offers more facilities than you might expect at first glance. One of its main attractions is the Flevoparkbad. This outdoor swimming pool is open only in the summer months, usually from May to September. It’s spacious, with a large 50-metre pool and a separate shallow pool for children. There are lawns around the pool, perfect for sunbathing. Note: there are no slides or large water playgrounds, but the pool is popular with swimmers and sunseekers.
Throughout the park you’ll also find sports facilities. There are tennis courts, a basketball court and a football pitch, all used frequently by locals and sports clubs. For children there’s a large playground with climbing frames, swings and a sandpit, centrally located and visible from the walking paths.
For those looking to unwind, there’s the Flevopark Tearoom. This cosy café sits by the water and has a large terrace with views over the pond. You can stop by for coffee, cake, lunch or a drink. In summer the terrace is often filled with people enjoying the peace and scenery. The tearoom occasionally hosts small events, such as live music or pub quizzes.
Activities: sports, chilling and enjoying nature
Flevopark is ideal for outdoor activities. The wide paths are perfect for running or rollerblading. There’s a set running route of about 2.5 kilometres that takes you past the park’s highlights. You’ll also see people practising yoga on the grass or joining small bootcamps. The sports fields are freely accessible, though you may need to book the tennis courts.
Prefer to relax? Bring a blanket and some snacks and find a spot on the large lawn. Here you can picnic, read a book or simply people-watch. In summer, groups often barbecue or play games together. Note: open fires aren’t allowed, but small disposable barbecues are permitted in some areas. Always check the latest rules on the signs in the park.
For nature lovers, Flevopark is a paradise. You’ll find a wide variety of trees, flowers and plants. Reeds grow along the water, where you’ll often spot waterfowl. In spring the cherry trees blossom, adding colour to the park. Flevopark Forest on the eastern side is wilder and less landscaped. Here you can lose yourself among the trees and feel like you’ve left the city behind.
Brouwerij ’t IJ: iconic terrace at the windmill
One of the most famous spots on the edge of Flevopark is Brouwerij ’t IJ. This Amsterdam brewery is housed in an old windmill, De Gooyer, and has a large terrace where you can enjoy locally brewed craft beer. The atmosphere is relaxed and easy-going. You’ll be sitting among Amsterdammers, tourists and beer enthusiasts of all ages.
The brewery serves a permanent range of beers, such as the well-known Zatte and Natte, as well as seasonal specials. You can order tasting trays or simply a big glass of your favourite. The terrace looks out over the windmill and the water, giving you a unique Amsterdam view.
Tip: on sunny days it can get busy, so arrive early or later in the afternoon. You can’t bring your own food, but snacks and small dishes are available. The atmosphere is always friendly, making it the perfect spot to end your day at Flevopark.
Events and festivals in summer
In summer, Flevopark regularly turns into a stage for small-scale events. Think open-air concerts, yoga sessions, food trucks or mini festivals. Most events are free and attract a mixed crowd. The Flevopark Tearoom sometimes organises live music or pub quizzes on its terrace.
Sports tournaments or workshops also take place on the fields. Keep an eye on the park’s calendar or the social media of local organisations for the latest dates. Because the park is so spacious, events never feel overcrowded. There’s always a quiet spot to retreat to if you need it.
Tip: bring your own blanket or chair when attending an event. There’s usually no fixed seating and the lawn is the best place to sit. Don’t forget some cash—food trucks or stalls don’t always accept cards.
Surroundings: discover Amsterdam-East and the Indische Buurt
Flevopark isn’t just great in itself; it’s also a perfect base to explore Amsterdam-East. The Indische Buurt is known for its cosy cafés, world restaurants and colourful markets. After an afternoon in the park, head to Javastraat for a bite or a drink. Here you’ll find Bar Botanique, a tropical café full of greenery with a laid-back vibe.
Just outside the park lies the Nieuwe Diep, open water with its own distillery and tasting room. In summer you can sit on the terrace and enjoy homemade liqueurs and genevers. The view over the water is beautiful and feels like a quick escape from the city.
Culture lovers will find galleries and small museums nearby. The Dappermarkt, one of Amsterdam’s best-known markets, is also within walking distance. Here you can pick up fresh snacks, flowers and vintage clothing. A day in Flevopark can easily be combined with other fun spots in East.
Three tips for your visit to Flevopark

- Bring swim gear if the Flevoparkbad is open. It’s one of the nicest outdoor pools in Amsterdam.
- End your day at Brouwerij ’t IJ or the Flevopark Tearoom with a drink and a view.

The vibe is laid-back and unpretentious, without the crowds of the Vondelpark. Whether you want to exercise, relax or meet new people, Flevopark has it all.
