The Blossom Park in the Amsterdam Forest is a special place where you can truly celebrate spring. With 400 cherry trees, donated by the Japan Women’s Club to Amstelveen in 2000, this park is dedicated to cherry blossom, or ‘Sakura’, every spring, which symbolizes new beginnings and the impermanence of life in Japan. The blooming period of the Japanese cherry trees is usually from mid to late March, depending on the weather, attracting visitors for the Hanami Matsuri, the traditional Cherry Blossom Festival where people picnic under the blooming trees.
In addition to the cherry blossoms, the park also features rhododendrons that bloom in May, creating a beautiful sight. Each of the 400 trees has a name, with 200 trees bearing a Japanese female name and 200 trees a Dutch female name, contributing to the unique bond between the Japanese community and Amstelveen.
Personally, I found the park really beautiful to see! However, try to go at a quiet time, as it can get very busy!
